Chapter 16

I stood with Roche outside Gould’s office — more like several floors above it. Before I left, Gould had gifted me a satchel with copies of the papers Roche and Quinn got from the 113th. He had first offered it to Roche, but it seemed carrying such information was beneath him, which explained why he was an enforcer and not a cop anymore. We had used Gould’s executive elevator to get to Upper City street level, the sun beginning to descend, though it would be a few hours before it reached the horizon. The sunlight and fresh air felt bitter after our meeting.

I leaned against the glass guard, looking over the west side of the city, the country rolling out for miles until it disappeared beyond the curve. Roche disappeared for a few minutes, looking for something to eat. We had hundreds of restaurants to choose from, and yet he had a craving for a twenty-cent dog he could find on any corner down below. Couldn’t say I faulted him for knowing what he liked.

He returned mostly fruitless, though he was able to snag some free samples from a nearby restaurant, protected by napkins, that looked like porkchops wrapped in something. It was food, and we needed anything right now.

“Al … you know where he went?” Roche asked.

“I don’t even want to begin guessing. Not many places a Blue-eye can go on the Plate, but after seeing that encounter, I think he needs you more than ever.”

“Did you see the way he looked at me? Christ, looked like my mother after I … you know.”

“Yeah, I know.” I looked over the edge again, seeing the cars escaping the Plate’s shadow and peeling out west toward the rest of the country. “Where do we even begin with this Probst thing? We’re out of leads after his apartment.”

“We are. Allen isn’t,” Roche countered. “We’ll let Probst reach out to him, and when he’s ready to come by and get our help, he’ll come by. But James Astor …”

“Yeah, I was going to ask about that.”

“The trail ran cold after I found out the Iron Hands threatened him. Seems I should start looking for him again, tracking down addresses, acquaintances, contacts … but later. Right now, we have a country to save.”

“Oh, great … not just the city nowadays. Always something bigger at stake.” I chuckled to myself, getting a smirk from Roche. “I seriously want to pretend like Greaves isn’t insane enough to use White-eye and demolish New York’s support infrastructure just for the chance to root out an old Italian bastard and some mystery woman. There are easier ways to do that.”

“I don’t think I agree,” Roche countered. “But whatever her motives, we need to get evidence for Schafer so she can make an airtight defence. Deist can only do so much with presumptions and logic. People are stupid. Half the people up here probably think Automatics run on magic.”

“And the other half?”

“Beer and batteries.”

I laughed. “You have a plan
